For many, the highlight of the safari day is enjoying a favorite drink while watching the sun set over the African landscape. BIRD WATCHING

Bird watching

Botswana is a birdwatcher's paradise, boasting an incredible diversity of over 600 recorded species, as noted by Birdlife Botswana. This remarkable avian diversity includes both resident birds and seasonal migrants that enrich the birdlife during the summer months. The varied landscapes across our camps and lodges provide unparalleled opportunities to explore some of Botswana's finest birding locations.

During safari activities, your guide will frequently pause to highlight and share fascinating information about the different bird species you encounter. You can also spot a variety of birds from your accommodation and around the camp.

For those with a deep passion for bird watching, we recommend informing your tour operator and the camp or lodge staff of your interest. Please note, however, that you may be sharing your vehicle with others who might not have the same enthusiasm for bird watching.

MOKORO SAFARIS

MOKORO SAFARIS

Mokoro safaris are a unique and serene way to explore the Okavango Delta, using the traditional mokoro or wooden canoe crafted from the sausage tree. Today, most camps and lodges have transitioned to using fiberglass replicas of the mokoro, which offer a similar authentic experience with enhanced durability.

What sets mokoro safaris apart from canoe safaris is the experience of gliding silently through the waterways while a skilled poler navigates the mokoro. This gentle and nearly silent method of travel allows guests to closely observe wildlife and soak in the natural beauty of the Delta.

At Crocodile Camp, we proudly support the Okavango Mokoro Community Trust (OKMCT). By participating in a mokoro safari, you contribute to community tourism initiatives that benefit local communities.

We also offer the option of overnight mokoro stays in the Okavango Delta, starting from Crocodile Camp. Additionally, mokoro safaris are available at Gomoti River Lodge and Saguni Safari Lodge, providing further opportunities to experience this tranquil mode of exploration.

GAME DRIVES

DAY DRIVES

Day drives are a quintessential activity on any safari, offering guests the opportunity to explore the diverse landscapes and wildlife of the region. Safari vehicles used for these drives are typically 4-wheel drive models, featuring rows of seats arranged in three rows. More luxurious safari vehicles are equipped with individual bucket seats and a canvas roof, while the rest of the vehicle remains open to maximize viewing opportunities.

Safari vehicles generally accommodate between 4 and 10 guests. Some camps and lodges ensure a 'window seat' experience, with only two seats per row, enhancing the safari experience by providing unobstructed views. Depending on the camp or lodge and the region, the vehicle is usually operated by a fully qualified guide, and in some cases, accompanied by a tracker seated in a designated seat.

Day drives focus on wildlife encounters and typically include two main types of excursions:

Early Morning Drive: Commences shortly after sunrise and usually concludes around 9 or 10 a.m.

Afternoon Drive: Begins after tea or high tea, around 4 p.m., and returns after dark.

For a safe and enjoyable safari experience, it is essential to listen attentively to your guide and follow their instructions at all times.

BOATING SAFARIS

BOATING SAFARIS

In terms of our camps and lodges, boating safaris are offered along the Chobe River. The Chobe River is reputed to offer the best game viewing by boat in the world. Elephants, hippos, and a host of wildlife can be seen along the Chobe River.

For something a bit different, you can also take a trip up the Zambezi River, where great birdlife and rural villages dot the landscape. Both Chobe West (Xhabe) and Chobe Mopani offer boat safaris along the Chobe River, usually conducted either early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

The only place in our current circuit that offers boating is Crocodile Camp. However, this is water level-dependent. If water levels are too low, we often drive some distance from Crocodile Camp to access a boat - again, all water level dependent.
