Due to the nature of the aircraft employed, all charter companies enforce a stringent luggage policy. Most companies mandate the use of soft bags for your luggage. Typically, you are granted a maximum luggage allowance (usually around 20kg), which should be divided between hand luggage (such as cameras) and the remaining items that will be stowed in the hold or cargo compartment.
Charter Seat Rates:
This is the standard offering, where a rate will be quoted to you based on a minimum of 2 guests flying the same route. It’s possible that you may be sharing the flight with other guests. It’s also common for the flight to make one or two stops en route. A waiting period of 20 to 30 minutes before departure is also usual.
Inter-Camp Charters:
Inter-camp charters operate on the same basis. The charter company will communicate the departure time to the camp or lodge. These flights are often coordinated to align with the safari schedule. Most charter flights operate between 09:30 and 15:00, allowing for optimal game viewing time.
Private Charters:
Private charters are available but are considered a pricier option. With this choice, you’ll fly directly to your destination without sharing the flight with anyone other than your own group.
Types of aircraft used:
The specific type of charter planes can vary among different charter companies. However, the following aircraft are the most commonly utilized in Botswana; they are the workhorses and backbone of the safari industry in the region.
Commonly used aircraft:
- Cessna 206: A single-engine aircraft that can seat a maximum of 5 passengers.
- Cessna 210: A single-engine aircraft that usually accommodates up to 4 passengers. The 210 is a faster aircraft primarily employed for flights exceeding 45 minutes in duration.
- Airvan: A single-engine aircraft often seating a maximum of 6 passengers (the passenger count may vary based on several factors).
- Cessna Grand Caravan: A single-engine aircraft commonly seating around 9 to 11 passengers (the passenger count may vary based on several factors).
