Chobe National Park
Camp Savuti perfectly embodies the quintessential Botswana safari experience. From enriching game viewing opportunities to genuine tented accommodations, it encapsulates the traditional way of immersing oneself in the splendor of one of Africa’s most remarkable wildlife regions.
Positioned at the heart of Chobe National Park, Camp Savuti rests along the banks of the arid Savuti Channel and in proximity to the renowned Savuti Marsh. Presently, the channel is dry; however, its historical fluctuations have showcased the unpredictability of its flow, as it has passed Camp Savuti in the past and once again might grace the Marsh with its waters.
The Savuti Marsh stands as a testament to a bygone vast inland lake, its water supply severed by ancient tectonic shifts. At present, the marsh sporadically receives nourishment from the capricious Savuti Channel. This channel experiences prolonged periods of desiccation, interrupted by unforeseen surges owing to tectonic activity nearby. The most recent encounter between the channel and Savuti Marsh occurred in January 2010, marking the first instance since 1982. This mercurial ebb and flow has left a trail of lifeless trees lining the channel’s banks. The Savuti area is characterized by expansive savannahs and undulating grasslands, infusing this sector of the park with vibrant wildlife activity.
Accommodating 10 guests in luxury and comfort, Camp Savuti boasts individual tents each equipped with a balcony and full bathroom. The recently revitalized guest area offers a plethora of spaces for relaxation, including a spacious bar, dining area, large pool, and deck—a profusion of options for leisurely lounging. Adjacent to the channel and connected to the main guest area lies a smaller dining space and a welcoming firepit.
Embark on exhilarating game drives aboard open safari vehicles crowned with the obligatory canvas roof, all under the guidance of knowledgeable rangers. Experience the electrifying proximity to predators, witnessing them in their natural habitat. Alternatively, marvel at the sight of resident elephants or observe the diverse plains game that calls this area home.
Guest Area :
The guest area at Camp Savuti overlooks the Savuti Channel and features a spacious Thatch roof structure cleverly designed to maximize space and create “hidden spaces” for relaxation or conversations about the day’s sightings. The expansive bar offers a fine selection of drinks, and your hosts can even mix up a variety of cocktails. The dining area and buffet slab provide a glimpse of the culinary delights awaiting you at Camp Savuti, all meticulously crafted by a dedicated staff to ensure that no one ever goes hungry without sampling some of these delights.
Adjacent to the guest area and also overlooking the Savuti Channel is a large pool surrounded by a deck. This area allows you to bask in the sun or find shade under one of the ample umbrellas. A small bar is also conveniently situated here.
Extending from the guest area is a long timber walkway that leads right to the edge of the Savuti Channel. Here, a small dining area awaits, and in front of it stretches a spacious open area furnished with director’s chairs. This is where the campfire is lit at night, providing the perfect setting for storytelling.
On the opposite bank of the Savuti Channel, concealed from view, lies Pump Pan. Despite being hidden, the sounds that emanate from this large pan at night are truly astonishing, ranging from the roars of lions and calls of hyenas to the trumpeting of elephants and the distinctive calls of zebras. At times, it becomes a symphony of various sounds.
Access:
Air Charter:
Situated in the western part of Chobe National Park, Camp Savuti can be reached through a light air transfer, connecting guests from Maun, Kasane, or numerous other camps and lodges to the Savuti airstrip. Flight times may differ. Upon arrival at Savuti Airstrip, your guide will be there to welcome you, marking the beginning of your Camp Savuti experience. The journey from Savuti airstrip to Camp Savuti is a 20-30 minute game drive transfer.
Via Road – Maun/ Mababe
The most direct route from Maun takes about 3 hours to Mababe Gate, although most self-drivers spend a few days in Moremi and Khwai before proceeding to Savuti.
From Maun – Beyond Mababe Village, do not take the first road, a straight cutline to Mababe Gate, but rather take the next road on the right. The turning is about 4 km northwest of the village and is signposted.
From Mababe Gate, it’s a 70 km journey to the park’s center and the campsite, taking between 3-5 hours depending on the road conditions, which can be quite sandy. Inquire at Mababe Gate about whether to take the Sand Ridge Road or the Marsh Road.
Under NO circumstances take the Marsh road without checking road conditions- enquire at the Park entrance and be very clear on the conditions you will expect. As a rule of thumb only attempt the Marsh road from April to November! Marsh road is very scenic and the first part along the Mababe can be very rewarding, the central piece of Marsh road can be something of a lottery , once you get near Marabou Pans game viewing significantly improves again
How to reach Savuti from Kasane and the North:
Kachikau Village is 93 km along a tarred road from Kasane, and from there, it’s 40 sandy kilometers to Goha Gate, the northern entrance to Savuti. From the gate, it’s another 30 kilometers, still sandy, to the center of Savuti Park.
